Soz-e-Watan — The Spark of Literary Revolution
Published in 1908 from Kanpur's Zamana Press under the pen name Nawab Rai, Soz-e-Watan (“Lament of the Fatherland”) was Premchand's debut collection. Its fierce anti-colonial message alarmed British officials, leading to the public burning of all 500 printed copies.
Historical Context: How Nawab Rai Became Premchand
In 1908, Dhanpat Rai Srivastava was working as a government school inspector while writing Urdu prose under the pseudonym Nawab Rai. Soz-e-Watan captured the rising spirit of Indian nationalism following the Swadeshi movement.
When the Hamirpur District Collector discovered the book, he summoned Nawab Rai, declared the stories seditious, and ordered all 500 copies of the book burned. He was barred from publishing without prior government clearance.
To bypass colonial censorship and continue writing for the freedom movement, his editor and close friend Daya Narain Nigam suggested a new pen name — Premchand. Thus, the banning of Soz-e-Watan marked the birth of Indian literature's greatest master.
